Notion AI Launches Research Mode for Database-Linked Queries

TL;DR

Notion released Research Mode in May 2025, letting users run natural-language queries across linked databases, wikis and documents -- surfacing answers with inline citations drawn from their own workspace.

The headline use case is internal knowledge retrieval: ask a question and get a synthesised answer drawn from your own meeting notes, project docs and databases, with each claim linked back to its source. For consultants, founders and operators who live inside Notion, this turns the workspace into something closer to a personalised research assistant. It does not replace dedicated tools like Roam or Obsidian for pure knowledge graphs, but for teams already standardised on Notion the friction reduction is significant. Research Mode is available on the Plus plan and above -- a genuine reason to upgrade if you are still on the free plan and frequently hunting through your own notes for information you know you wrote down somewhere.
